Country House parties are no longer the domain of the rich and famous. In 2003, Louise & Chris Daniels founded the Big Country House Ltd. Together with their children Rebecca & Edward their purpose has been to provide unique spaces for guests to create special memories. They have hosted family parties, unforgettable birthday weekends, reunions of college friends and many more including gamers, musicians, vicars, crafters all in the magnificent setting of an English Country House.
Louise, a primary school teacher with over thirty years of experience and being given an OFSTED Outstanding Teacher Award, is a real people person who loves to host. She engages with social media platforms and carries out PR, runs the booking platform and wrestles with the payment gateway! As well as supporting Chris in their hospitality business, she also runs a thriving paper craft studio with regular classes, zoom calls and many creative activities.
Chris has a degree in Electrical Engineering and after a twenty-year career in a variety of global projects designing submarine cable networks, CCTV systems and manufacturing CAD equipment, rose to senior management yet aspired to run his own business. He has used his numerous DIY skills to renovate then manage their homes. He manages the properties, built, and runs the websites and handles the back office. He is also regularly called in to answer those ‘little’ queries from our guests.
In 2015 Chris became aware that the local council was closing the Tourist Information Centre. Retford is not a hot spot for tourism. With the help of volunteers, they opened Retford Hub with a Community Shop, Art Gallery, Pilgrim Museum, studios, workshops, and café which they ran for six years, whilst continuing to host guests from around the world. They handed over the baton of the Hub in 2021 and now enjoy the freedoms of travel in their tiny caravan , whilst still running a thriving hospitality business, using modern technology to work more remotely!
